Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
