Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
